To the ATLAS experiment
participate about 1800 Physicists coming from 144 institutes around the world.
It will study proton-proton interactions at the Large Hadron Collider LHC at the European Laboratory for
Particle Physics at CERN.
The Lecce group (together with groups in
Naples and Rome II) is involved in the muon
spectrometer instrumentation, more specifically in the costruction of
the Resistive Plate Chambers,RPCs,
for the level 1 muon trigger in the barrel region.
The ATLAS project is an international
collaboration involving 34 countries.
It will explore the fundamental nature of matter and the basic forces
that shape our universe.
Its detector will search for new discoveries in the head-on collisions of
protons of extraordinarily high energy.
ATLAS is the largest collaborative effort ever attempted in the physical
sciences.
